Body-drug interactions
Cursusdoel
- Examine and understand the underlying relation between the main processes (liberation, absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity) which determine the behaviour of a drug in the human body
- Analyse plasma concentration vs. time curves and calculate corresponding pharmacokinetic parameters (AUC, Co, Cmax, Vd, Ke, t1/2, tmax, F, Cl)
- Explain the interaction between ligands and their macromolecule targets, predict the pharmacodynamic dose-response relationship (agonist/antagonist, potency/efficacy, competitive and non-competitive drug binding) and calculate corresponding pharmacodynamic parameters (IC50, EC50, Emax, Vmax, Km)
- Design an appropriate experimental design and study protocol to test the proposed hypothesis
- Obtain, statistically analyse, evaluate and present data in accordance with good laboratory practice (GLP) standards
- Select and evaluate appropriate literature to compose a review on the role of ligand-receptor interactions in disease
- Employ appropriate communication techniques that enhance collaboration within group projects
- Use a strategy to self-manage your academic behaviour

Work forms
The course will be taught on the basis of self-study modules, lectures, tutorials, “meet the expert” seminars and feedback question sessions. In addition, big part of the course will consist of lab skill days and a group lab project. Before Christmas you will individually complete the lab skills days in which you get acquainted with the lab and learn the techniques needed for your own project. After Christmas, the group lab projects will start where you get to design and conduct your own experiments to answer a research question of your own choosing. Furthermore, there will be a writing assignment in which you both develop your writing skills and deepen your knowledge on the pharmacodynamic influences in disease.
