Genealogies of Religious (In)Tolerance (2025/2026: Periode 4)
Cursusdoel
The course has two primary objectives:
Analytical objective: students will become acquainted with a genealogical approach to religious difference, tracing how significant medieval and early‐modern episodes shaped our concepts of tolerance, intolerance, and imaginaries of co‐existence. They will develop the ability to apply these conceptual frameworks to both historical case studies and contemporary debates about when religious plurality is negotiated peacefully, and when it turns violent.
Pedagogical objective: students will strengthen their skills in critically reading and interpreting complex theoretical and historical texts. Through guided discussion and written assignments, they will learn to analyze arguments, evaluate sources, and articulate their own interpretations, both in writing and in seminar presentations.

Vakinhoudelijk
In a world where religion appears to be a primary source of conflict, we face a pressing question: How can we live alongside religious difference, and at what point does that difference become so intolerable that violence is seen as the preferred option? This course adopts a “genealogical” approach: examining how complex historical processes shaped the concepts that still frame our present-day understanding of the possibility of different groups co-existing – and the juncture at which co-existence is deemed impossible. We will explore several key past episodes from the Middle Ages and the early modern period that shaped notions of both peaceful and violent existence alongside religious Others, and consider how fundamental concepts like tolerance and intolerance from these eras continue to influence our imagination in the present.
