After completion of this course, you are able to:
  • Apply and integrate theoretical and methodological knowledge about how to develop a research proposal.
  • Delineate a research proposal to manageable proportions and present the proposal in a well-structured and clear way.
  • Give a critical review on research designs made by others.
  • Explain how your research proposal will contribute to transforming our society towards a more sustainable one.

Vakinhoudelijk

This course gives you intensive hands-on training in one of the key skills that graduated research master students should possess: the ability to design a research project - through developing a research proposal - that is interesting, scientifically sound but at the same time has the potential to contribute to a transformation to a more sustainable society. Setting up such a research project is easier said than done. But throughout this course, you will be provided with theoretical guidance and practical advice. You will become familiar with some good practices and learn how to avoid the most common pitfalls. After completion of this course, you will be better prepared to start a comprehensive research project, such as your master's thesis. Moreover, you will be better able to make an informed assessment of the research proposed by others.

The course starts with a general introduction lecture and some guest lectures in which PhD students present their research. In addition, some lectures about current hot topics and discussions related to doing research will be given, including: open science, research integrity, data collection / privacy and Research Impact Pathways.

Voorbereiding

To prepare the first two lectures, students have to read the text book.

At the end of the course, you will design your own poster based on your final research proposal. In a tutorial, you are asked to give a poster pitch in which you aim to promote your research in order to get funding. In other words: it is not simply about giving a summary of your research proposal, but about why your research is relevant for society and science – why should companies/funding organizations invest in your work?

Tutorials

Six tutorials will be scheduled: -two tutorials in which you discuss and internalise the key concepts covered in the textbook. These are necessary to write a good research proposal. In these tutorials, the teachers also provide some guidance on how to translate the key concepts to the specifics of each track. -one tutorial in which you critically assess finalised Master theses and well-assessed research proposals in interdisciplinary groups. -two tutorials in which you discuss and provide and receive peer feedback on drafts of your research proposals. -one tutorial in which you present a poster based on your research proposal.

• Analysis MSc thesis and presentation (in pairs): Has to be sufficient. • DIY individual research design: 80% • Poster presentation: 20%
