After successful completion of this course, the students:
- are acquainted with main concepts related to ecosystem resilience, main frameworks for its assessment, applications in the scientific community and key points of critique.
- are able to apply data processing and analytical skills on different methods to quantify ecosystem resilience at different spatial scales.
Vakinhoudelijk
Resilience has become a very common concept across all domains of society. In general, it refers to the capacity of a giving system to deal with change. This link with change explains in particular the increasing attention given to resilience in ecology and environmental sciences under the current situation of global change and the concern on how ecosystems will deal with it. The increasing popularity of ecological resilience has come in parallel with an increasing amount of related terminology, measurement frameworks and indicators, which this course will help you to navigate. More specifically, the course aims at teaching main frameworks to measure (monitor) the health and resilience of ecosystems at different scales (local to global), including applications in the scientific community and key points of critique.
The course also aims at teaching a set of analytical skills that can capture and analyse ecosystem resilience to global environmental change by looking at spatial and temporal changes. For instance, dynamics (temporal change) are particularly important to monitor resilience, and the availability of time series at high spatial resolution is now exploding. You will also gain knowledge on exploitation of open data such as satellite imagery and open platforms to run geospatial analysis such as Google Earth Engine. The course will also address possible ways of building ecological resilience based on nature-based solutions.
