Advanced Physical hydrology (2025/2026: Periode 1)
Cursusdoel
Once completed, the student:
- Has obtained expertise in the field of understanding / quantifying / modelling of key underlying processes of the hydrological cycle;
- Has obtained the ability to integrate / interpolate / extrapolate (incomplete) knowledge at a high level, including information gathered from research-articles;
- Is able to think / develop / apply (partly) original ideas in a (semi) research context;
- Demonstrates skills for pursuing an original research question in a hydrological (sub) field.
Vakinhoudelijk
The course covers the following topics:
- Water in the atmosphere, precipitation and evaporation;
- Transpiration and interception by vegetation, infiltration and water flow in soils;
- Groundwater flow in aquifers and hillslopes;
- Surface water flow, hydrodynamic and hydrological routing methods;
- Spatial and temporal scales in hydrological process descriptions;
- Modelling catchment response to weather, climate or land use change
- Hydrological modelling of the catchment response to weather, climate or land use change using lumped and spatially distributed models.
Werkvormen
Toelichting
Attendance requirement Yes Explanation Computer practicals are designed to offer students hands-on experience with quantitative analysis and different techniques in hydrology. Principally, they serve to deepen the understanding of the students of the information offered during the lectures and tutorials and obtain direct feedback from the teaching staff. At the same time, they provide a means for the student to improve his/her skills to complete the individual assignment and work under guidance on this.
LecturesToelichting
Explanation The first lecture is compulsory. Lectures are used to present the theoretical background on the different aspects covered and to provide an overview of their recent applications in the field of land surface hydrology, from both a practical and scientific perspective. Preparation of meetings In the course guide a detailed schedule with all the due dates and the material that has to be studied or prepared in advance to the course meetings will be provided. Contribution to group work Group work is limited to the problems that have to be completed during the computer practicals. All marks for the course are based on individual tasks and the completion thereof is the responsibility of each individual student.
Individual projectToelichting
Attendance requirement Yes Explanation As part of the course, you will choose and individually investigate a hydrological topic and report on it. Preparation of meetings In preparation of the peer review session, you will have to hand in a first complete draft. Based on this first draft and the peer review you will write your final report that will be graded. Contribution to group work As part of this individual assignment, you will evaluate the work of a fellow student and provide feedback to him/her (peer review)
TutorialsToelichting
Attendance requirement Yes Explanation Tutorials are intended to help students design and improve their individual assignment via peer review and direct feedback.
