Vakinhoudelijk
In this course, students of the Research Master Art History (and additional students from other programs) learn about historical and contemporary studio practices. How do artists shape their creative practice in and through their studios? How do studio practices help artists position themselves, both artistically, socially, economically and politically, and in their relationship with their audience? Theoretically, we will work with concepts such as art world, cultural field, art institution and infrastructural critique, and our learning activities, readings and discussions will revolve around urgent studio practice-related societal and cultural dilemmas, like artist precarity, artist resilience, the need for community building, and current debates on patronage and funding.
Through studio visits, discussions, and hands-on practice, students will explore artistic, social, economic, and political processes and positions from multiple perspectives: as observers and researchers, as makers, and as organizers. The course consists of various components: artist studio visits, (guest) lectures, practical experience, and the organization of a symposium.
