Vakinhoudelijk
This course explores how innovations in computer science can be used in the study of art. In particular, it will focus on a number of approaches that are specific and relevant to art history, including image vision techniques, 3D capture and modelling, and immersive ways of displaying and engaging with art. Students will critically assess the use of such tools in the study, conservation, and display of visual and material culture. The course will query how digital methodologies may change the questions which art historians ask and elicit new insights into art and its history.
Lectures will introduce the topics covered while practical tutorials will enable students to gain a basic familiarity of some of the digital tools used in the study of art. These sessions will be complemented by excursions. The course will conclude with a final project through which students will propose the application of digital tools and methods to an art historical topic of choice.
