Musical Knack Lab 2: Staging Music (2025/2026: periode 2)
Cursusdoel
Students will be able to interact with the music sector and learn industry best-practice first-hand. Coursework that meets the expected high standards will be showcased and can be included in the student’s professional portfolio.
Vakinhoudelijk
The course is solidly grounded in current debates about the future of music and performance. It will bring students into touch with the latest developments that help artists put out and perform their music. The students will be asked to engage with various conceptual models to help them keep sight of the bigger picture in which new trends emerge.
To understand the difficulties and practicalities of putting a (music) event together, the students have to work together to organize such an event. They will learn key skills around working together across cultural backgrounds; finding the rights tools and frameworks to bring ideas to life; and shipping an actual product – an event.

Knowledge of how to stage and distribute music through various methods; experience of community building; experience in organizing (music) events; knowledge of the latest developments in music and technological advances.

Field trip to a exemplary Dutch institution in the field of Staging Music.
SeminarToelichting
The course is a seminar with (guest) lectures, classroom debate and hands on work on a music production. Guest lecture given by experts in the field of Staging Music.
Bijdrage
Students will have their own responsibility in realizing productions and critically reflecting on various issues of staging.
Voorbereiding
The students are obliged to thoroughly study and analyze the programs and texts under discussion, and contribute to classroom debate with their own programs, texts and the like.

For every guest lecturer that is invited to this course, you will need to prepare literature and a minimum of 1 question. This question will be part of a Q&A session in class and is to be handed in the day before the guest lecture. Your question should be relevant, interesting and focus on the materials and subjects of this course. You are welcome to hand in more relevant questions.

Voorkennis
Advanced knowledge of music history, advanced repertoire knowledge of either classical or pop/jazz music, knowledge of the international musical infrastructure.
Voorkennis kan worden opgedaan met
BA program Muziekwetenschap, MA Musical Infrastructure in an International Context.
