Cursusdoel

The successful student
  • will be able to analyse, interpret and translate Latin literary texts from the period c. 300 CE – c. 600 CE in their cultural and historical context
  • will understand the development of the Latin language in the period and will be able to reflect on this orally and in writing
  • will be able to independently employ the scholarly apparatus (specialised dictionaries, grammar, bibliography) belonging to the field

Vakinhoudelijk

The term ‘Late Antiquity’ denotes the period between c. 300 CE - c. 600 CE. We study the Latin language and literature in this period and concentrate on the transformation of classical traditions; societal, cultural and religious innovations; and the development of the Latin language. Themes central to the course vary year by year and may include issues related to literary witnesses to changing political worlds; thinking about corporality, death and afterlife; historiographical approaches and saints’ cults. The relevance of the authors we will read exceeds the period itself, therefore reception and transmission of the capita selecta will be part of the course.

Aanvullende informatie

The course is the third mandatory course in the minor Latin Language and Culture in European Tradition and builds on the course Latijn II (TL2V14003).

The language of instruction is Dutch and English; the language of examination is Dutch or English for non-Dutch speaking students.

Note that this course is offered simultaneously at BA- and RMA-level. While studying sources of Latin literature, culture and linguistic change of Late Antiquity is a shared course goal for students in both groups. This translates to significant differences in course goals, language of instruction and examination, and forms of examination.

Kennis van het Latijn op verdiepend niveau; neem bij twijfel contact op met de cursuscoördinator. Vrijstelling voor Latijn II is mogelijk op basis van cijferlijst CE VWO, ter beoordeling van de minorcoördinator.

Verplicht materiaal

  • BOEK
    Latin grammar (either in Dutch or in English). There are many good options, see e.g. P. Brand, Kleine Latijnse grammatica (Loenen, 1987); C. Fisser: Studeo. Een moderne Latijnse grammatica (Leiden 2005/2009); J.H. Allen and J.B. Greenough, New Latin Grammar (New York, 1903/2001).
  • WOORDENBOEK
    A Latin dictionary (either Latin-Dutch or Latin-English). Good options are H. Pinkster, Woordenboek Latijn-Nederlands (Amsterdam 1998) or C. Lewis, An Elementary Latin Dictionary (Oxford, 1891/1995). Both can be accessed online through the University Library portal, though I would recommend getting a physical copy. You’ll need it for the exams.
