Cursusdoel

The final project functions as a test of the MA student’s academic level at the end of the programme. The student shows that the student is able to plan and conduct research, and to report on the findings in an academic paper of high quality in the language of study, using an appropriate format and register.

Vakinhoudelijk

The final project tests the student’s exit level in the field of Intercultural Communication. The students shows they are able to conduct research on an aspect of ICC and to place their work within the context of earlier research and the public debate. The final product is a report of the student’s research that has to meet academic standards. The report must be detailed, verifiable and systematic. The students show they are able to present results effectively. Course load, duration, supervision, procedure and assessment are described in the Richtlijnen Masterthesis, which can be downloaded from the web site for the MA programme in ICC: Interculturele communicatie > studieprogramma > masterscriptie.

Students wanting to qualify for the English stream should register for the English programme in ICC.Their final papers should be written in English and at least one of their supervisors should be in the English Department, monitoring the language specific requirements.

Toelichting

Students are expected to research their chosen topics actively and independently. They formulate research questions that are directly related to intercultural communication and the language of study. They collect relevant documentation and data, and find answers to their research questions while applying the theory and skills they have mastered in their course of study.

Bijdrage

When working on the thesis in groups, a collegial collaboration is required.

Voorbereiding

It is the responsibility of the student to formulate a research question and find a qualified departmental supervisor in the language of study. The student and supervisor agree on the topic, research question, structure of the research paper, planning and supervision. Observing the agreed deadlines, the student informs the supervisor of his/her progress or problems and results.

Verplicht | Weging 100% | Minimum cijfer 5,5 | ECTS 15

Assessment criteria include the degree of independence shown by the student in collecting data and finding the academic tools needed to answer the research question in the field of intercultural communication. The final paper is also assessed on planning, structure and use of academic register in language of study.

Voorkennis

Kennis van talige en culturele processen van communicatie in het algemeen en in het bijzonder in relatie tot de taal van de studie.
