Vakinhoudelijk
Critical Discourse Analysis is a suitable methodology course for all humanities students. It can also serve to meet the methodology requirement for social science students who wish to finish tracks in anthropology, law, or political sciences. It can be an elective for other students.
The first ten weeks focus on the theoretical underpinnings and practical application of Critical Discourse Analysis: a methodology for investigating the relations between language, power and ideology. CDA starts from the insight that language choices carry values, establish power relationships, and that these can be analysed systematically. The course addresses questions such as: what does “critical” in CDA mean? How do textual and visual representations shape our understanding of reality? How can we analyse the ideological dimensions of particular linguistic and visual choices?
Students practise CDA tools on verbal and visual sources and receive and provide peer feedback. In the final part of this phase, students develop a small CDA-inspired research project related to their major, select an appropriate CDA method, and conduct a sample analysis.
In the last five weeks, the course aims to foster the interpersonal and self-reflexive competencies required to effectively engage in community-based research and practice. With a particular focus on self-reflexive practice, students examine subjectivity, positionality, critical consciousness, power relations, and the social, cultural, socioeconomic, and political dimensions of social justice. The emphasis is not on additional research tools or data collection, but on how researchers understand and reflect on themselves, their relationships to others, and the power dynamics within research and community engagement.
Format
Week 1–7 Interactive lectures and seminars (Q&A, discussion of assignments)
Week 8 Poster presentations
Week 9-10 Work on research proposal (workshops & individual consultations)
Week 11-15 Power, Positionality & Self-Reflexivity
week 11-15: The last five weeks are designed with a special focus on peer-to-peer exchange and transformative-reflexive learning. Each week will comprise one large symposium (class) and, additionally, a small, student-led group seminar, wherein students will reflect together and conduct group activities. In the weekly small group meetings, students will discuss the various topics that arise in the large symposia, while completing weekly activities corresponding to each week’s topic. The weekly large symposium will be led by the course instructors and comprise lectures and presentations associated with the key theories, concepts and topics associated with course. When possible, guest speakers (academics, activists and professionals) will share presentations associated with their work. The course may also include a field trip, which will be scheduled on a Tuesday afternoon. In line with the transformative learning focus, students will be expected to maintain a reflection journal through the duration of the five weeks, documenting their self-reflexive journey and growth.
