Chinese Language and Culture III
Cursusdoel
- demonstrate higher intermediate level (HSK 3) of Mandarin Chinese:
- read around 900 words and write 450 words
- conduct daily conversations in Chinese,
- write an article in Chinese
- read the simple versions of Chinese news
In this course, the final course grade is based on five elements: quizzes/assignments, a mid-term exam, a final exam, a presentation and a book/film review.
- Quizzes/assignments: the quizzes test how well you have mastered the new words and characters in the form of a dictation (in total about 150 new words for writing, or 450 words including the ones you have learned from previous courses), while the assignments help you to exercise how to use the words in contexts, e.g. by writing posts on WeChat and reading and retelling the Chinese news.
- Mid-term exam: this tests the reading and writing skills you have acquired during the first half of the semester.
- Final exam: this tests the reading and writing skills you have acquired during the second half of the semester.
- Presentation: this tests your speaking/presenting skills by using the words and grammar you have learned. The discussion session afterwards enhances your daily conversation skills.
- Book/film review: this allows you to gain insight into Chinese culture or history through a book or a film. Meanwhile you also train your listening and writing skills by following the conversations in the film and rewriting the story in your own words. Plus you will explore the book/film’s cultural or historical background by reading reviews and discussing the topic.
Vakinhoudelijk
Classes meet for 1.45 hours once a week. Conversation is practiced extensively during the lessons and listening skill is practiced with the help of audiovisual materials. Reading and writing skills are practiced with weekly assignments including writing short articles, reading texts and news, etc. The small size of the class allows students to benefit from a good deal of individual attention.
