After completing this course students are able to:
in oral communication:
a) understand uncomplicated speech about various topics beyond the most immediate needs;
b) engage in basic conversation about a variety of topics such as personal history, personal experiences, study and university life;
c) participate in simple conversations.
In written communication:
d) read/understand simple texts in various general domains;
e) write in an uncomplicated form on a variety of familiar topics, personal topics, general events and concrete descriptions.
Relationship between tests and course goals:
The writing tests evaluate your progress with respect to learning objective e).
The reading test evaluates your progress with respect to learning objective d).
The oral exam evaluates your progress with respect to learning objectives a)-c).

Language
The language part of the course helps you to develop the basic skills and strategies necessary to successfully handle uncomplicated oral and written communication skills. These may occur in a variety of social situations you could encounter in daily life in the Netherlands.
Culture
The main purpose of the culture & society part of the classes is to provide a basic understanding of present-day Dutch society & culture. Attention will be given to various issues pertaining to Dutch culture & society today. Through culture presentations covering the culture of the Netherlands and the Dutch given by the students themselves and group discussions they learn to understand mainly the inside perspective, in other words the Dutch way of approaching and discussing cultural and society issues.
Format
During language classes the classroom language is Dutch, though explanations will be given in English when necessary. The main activity is the use of Dutch in a variety of oral and written communication tasks. Self-study is an important part of the course. Students in this course have to prepare for class with the course book De Opmaat. Students are expected to come to class with their own questions and analyze their own learning problems and learning needs.Topics on Dutch society, history and culture will be introduced based on student presentations on these topics. On occasion, students are to discuss specific aspects of these themes, and review it from various angles. In doing so, argumentations and considerations behind the Dutch approach to various matters in Dutch culture can be explored. Creativity and originality (e.g. in terms of an intercultural approach) are highly valued in this section of the course.
