Cursusdoel

Course goals:
  • Language
By the end of the course students should be able in oral communication to:
  1. perform tasks with linguistic ease, confidence, and competence.
  2. explain in detail and narrate fully and accurately in all time frames.
  3. discuss a variety of topics concretely.
  4. use precise vocabulary and intonation to express meaning and often show great fluency and ease of speech.
By the end of the course students should be able in written communication to:
  1. write about a variety of topics with significant precision and detail.
  2. handle informal and formal correspondence according to appropriate conventions.
  3. write summaries and reports of a factual nature.
  4. narrate and describe in the major time frames.
  5. have good control of a range of grammatical structures and a fairly wide general vocabulary.
  • Culture
  1. The main purpose of the cultural component of the course is to encourage students to become critical and intercultural language users. In order to achieve this, students need to have a basic understanding of present-day Dutch society and culture and how to apply this knowledge. In addition, attention will be given to students’ own cultural backgrounds and how these influence their view of Dutch culture.


Relationship between assessment and learning goals:
  • Portfolio assignments (together 40%): test the student’s ability to read, understand and critically present their understanding of course material on Dutch culture, and to link this with own knowledge and experiences (course goals 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10)
  • Vocabulary and grammar test (25%): tests the student’s competence in the use of the grammar, syntax and vocabulary discussed in the course book (course goals 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9).

Vakinhoudelijk

Content:
The language part of the course helps students to improve and develop skills and strategies necessary to successfully handle oral and written tasks and social situations.
The cultural part of the course provides information that enables the student to understand cultural & societal aspects of the Netherlands.
Format:
The classroom language is Dutch. The main activity is the use of Dutch in a variety of oral and written communication tasks performed in small groups, in pairs or with the whole class. The instructor provides input, instruction and explanations. The course follows the flipped classroom pedagogy: students prepare the content at home and class time is used for interactive activities in which the students use the language actively and critically discuss the cultural content. Students in this course are expected to come to class with their own questions and analyze their own learning problems and learning needs.

Entry requirements:
This course is designed for students who are fluent in Dutch, but who have never received any formal education in Dutch.
For the language part the entrance level is: Advanced Mid (B2). Exit level is Advanced High (C1).

Students who wish to participate will first have to contact the instructor of the course.

Voorkennis

Students need to apply for course admittance. This course is designed for students who are fluent in Dutch, but who have never received any formal education in Dutch. The speaking and writing entrance level is Advanced Mid,as defined in the ACTFL Guidelines.
