Cursusdoel
After completing this course students are able to:
- Identify and understand a selection of the most important movements and figures in modern art. In doing so, students will also learn the skills necessary to engage with works produced by the makers from this period that we will not directly study (Assignment 2, 3, 4)
- Grasp varying approaches to and definitions of modern art (Assignment 1)
- Describe modernist works of art both formally and historically (Assignment 2, 3, 4)
- Critically engage with texts through the practice of close reading, written analysis, and discussion of primary and secondary sources (Assignment 2, 3, 4)
- Actively listen, provide feedback, collaborate, discuss, and present with peers (Assignment 1, 2,3)
Vakinhoudelijk
This course examines modern art in Western Europe and the United States from the late 19th through the 21th century. It includes different movements such as impressionism, primitivism, cubism, futurism, dada, surrealism, and abstract expressionism. We will also study the legacy of modernism in contemporary art. This course seeks to understand these various movements in arts and culture as well as through their manifestations and entanglements in transcultural contexts. Together we will articulate a history that highlights connections across time and place. We should not, however, fall into the trap of believing the path we follow through this history is singularly definitive. Rather, this course plots one constellation among countless possibilities of modern art.
