Topic for Fall 2024: Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations
In this Fall’s Senior Seminar in Philosophy we will read the Philosophical Investigations. As a guide through this work with its ‘elusive’ philosophical purpose we will use Marie McGinn’s book Wittgenstein and the Philosophical Investigations (Routledge, 1997). The primary text is: Ludwig Wittgenstein Philosophical Investigations translators and editors P.M..S. Hacker and Joachim Schulte, John Wiley and Sons, 4th edition.
Then there is the most famous critical text on the Investigations by Saul Kripke. This will be the third text we will read: Wittgenstein on Rules and Private Language, Wiley, 1984. These three texts are the required reading for the course.
In the course we will read the Investigations in the order followed by McGinn’s guidebook. When we get to the (large) parts on rules and private language we will reserve time to read Wittgenstein first, then Kripke’s analysis, and then McGinn’s commentary (so as not to spoil the surprise).
