Advanced Spanish Language and Culture (2025/2026: periode 3)

After completing this course students are able to understand and demonstrate knowledge and insight in Spanish and Spanish American Culture, Art and History from 400 AD till the present moment and are able to:

Listening

understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
understand the main point of many radio or TV programs on current affairs or topics of personal or professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear.

Reading

understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency everyday or job-related language.
understand the description of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters.

Spoken interaction

deal with most situations likely to arise while traveling in an area where the language is spoken.
enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events).

Spoken production

connect phrases in a simple way in order to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions.
briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
narrate a story or relate the plot of a book or film and describe reactions.

Writing

write simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
write personal letters describing experiences and impressions.

Exit level for speaking and writing is Advanced Low/Mid, as defined in the ACTFL Guidelines.

The level and content of this course remain largely the same as the previous version UCHUMSPA21 Spanish Language and Culture II.

There are intermediate level entry requirements for this course: UCHUMSPA11 taken in 2024-2025 or UCHUSPA21 taken in 2025-2026.

This course focuses on language and culture of the Spanish speaking countries. The starting point is Spain and Spanish America today, the current societies and the issues they face. Language learning prepares for communication with native speakers and acquiring the functional tools for establishing and maintaining interactions with Spanish speaking people.

Culture, history and literature are addressed via documents [written and audiovisual] in Spanish and detailed on a weekly basis in the course description. Tasks in various forms related to these topics will be performed mainly individually.

The study guide contains information necessary for acquiring the required exit level of the language [B1]. It also marks pace and progress, and deadlines through the semester.

Format
Contact hours focus on language practice in line with the above mentioned aims. During the lessons students will mainly work in pairs and small groups. All participants have to complete obligatory self-study assignments before class. Students are expected to take active part during the lessons as well as in group tasks.
