In this course, you will work with partners like inhabitants or organisations who would like to make a change in the society of Utrecht to make it a better place. This change should have an impactful meaning. This is not easy as the issues they try to tackle are complex and dynamic and often related to Sustainable Development Goals as set by the UN (https://sdgs.un.org/goals). For example, in the field of good health and well-being (3), quality of education (4), decent work and economic growth (8), sustainable cities (11) and innovation and infrastructure (9).
The complexity and dynamics of these societal challenges that our partners face are representative of global problems as well and require a multi-faceted approach. In this course, students work in diverse teams in co-creation with a community partner who faces a challenge. Therefore we will work on location in Utrecht. The method used is based on two Action research cycles. A participatory form of research which revolves around the main phases of taking action and reflecting on the outcome of the action before starting a new cycle since it will create new possibilities for action towards the desired direction/change.
It is a learning by doing approach that challenges everybody to bring about different methods, types of knowledge, skills, an inquiring and reflective attitude as well as contributing actively in order to start making a change in the challenge that the partner faces. Previous students have indicated that during this experience as an action researcher, not only qualitative and/or quantitative data was gained to better understand factors involved in the problem, but that you also research your personal opinions, assumptions & experiences as well as those of the entire team and organisation that is embedded within a community. This implies that the trajectory of the process and the exact outcome is not known at the start of the course.
Every year we will work with new partners, but previous examples of challenges were reducing food waste (Buurtbuik), package-free grocery shopping (LOOS), making Utrecht heart safe through education and AED machines (Sterre & stad) or a free choice project (DOCK).
The first two weeks is devoted to team building and to immerse oneself in the neighbourhood in which the partners work. They bring in the problem they want to inquire/resolve after which small, diverse teams are formed. In the following weeks the teams and partner work in co-creation through the components of the action research cycles, that consists of identifying a problem, planning and carry out the action, and evaluate on the effect of the action and new state of knowledge, while reflecting throughout the steps. The teams will be offered intensive guidance by the teachers/coaches, guiding you through the different phases of action research by providing background info/literature, discuss progress, plans, give new perspectives/info, etc. However, students are expected to be active as well to e.g. search for literature, do fieldwork, contact organisations or new stakeholders. Action learning sets are held, which is a learning method to obtain new information, keep an open view on and sharpen the direction of the project. The teams will also present their ideas and results to relevant stakeholders. A final reflective interview will take place between the team, teachers/coaches, community partner and relevant stakeholders to bring the project further.
