Vakinhoudelijk
‘Encountering China’ in its multiple forms requires examining the making of contemporary China from the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949 and the establishment of the People’s Republic of China under the leadership of the Communist Party of China to the present day. We will particularly focus on the nature of the social embeddedness of the politics and the economics in both the Maoist period and how it was re-made in the Reform era. Combining historical and contemporary perspectives, the course is divided into four parts. First, we will introduce and interrogate the Maoist period up until 1976. The second part will examine the reform period from 1976-1997. The next part will highlight key aspects of the contemporary era. Finally, by drawing on examples which cut across a global North/South divide, we will examine China’s strategy of going global and its variegated impacts around the world.
