Digital Citizen: Mapping Spheres of Change
Cursusdoel
After completing this course students are able to:
1. demonstrate knowledge of the key debates pertaining to digital citizenship and develop a clear understanding of the transformation of citizenship in a networked and datafied society
2. relate perspectives from their own curricular background(s) to the themes of this course
3. make connections between theories from various disciplines and fields and apply interdisciplinary perspectives in an analytical framework
4. research a topic of their choice and prepare and lead a class
5. write a well-structured journalistic feature article

Vakinhoudelijk
Digital technologies have become ubiquitous, pervading our lives even when we are unaware of them. When these technologies and platforms generate information about us, translating all aspects of our lives into digital data, we become ‘datafied’: our identities and actions become track-able, catagoris-able, forecast‐able, transmitt‐able and stor‐able. This datafication not only affects our individual behaviour and sense of self, it also challenges our traditional notion of citizenship, our public sphere as a site of liberal democratic practice, and our sense of community. The Internet here becomes the medium through which citizenship is being channelled and through which citizenship is being constituted: we become participants within a networked society.
In this interdomain course we will explore the unique socio-cultural, ethical, and scholarly challenges posed by digital citizenship from various fields of inquiry such as media studies, journalism, critical data studies, anthropology, political theory or philosophy.
We will also identify tactics by which citizen journalists, artists, designers and networked activists seek to subvert sociotechnical regulations and thus overcome the determinist notion of a passive data subject. We will conclude the course by re-imagining digital citizenship beyond deference and anxiety.
Format
In preparation for class meetings, students will read the assigned texts, and in some of the weeks, students will also do an exercise (e.g. prepare reading notes, conduct a data walk or platform analysis) outside class time which they will collect in the ‘portfolio of weekly exercises’ throughout the semester.
Most classes will be held seminar-style with ample opportunity to discuss texts, and reflect on current debates. Several classes will be student-led. This means students will identify an angle of their interest regarding the theme(s) of the week and thoroughly prepare and lead the class.
Students will also learn how to write a journalistic feature article. At the end of the semester, they will write an interdisciplinary research paper on a topic of their choice.
Active participation in class is expected.
