Content
Wave phenomena are omnipresent in nature. Understanding typical wave-like features such as interference, polarization, diffraction and resonance is relevant in many fields of physics, from hydrodynamics to quantum mechanics. In this lab course, you will study these features from an experimental point of view. During the course, we will also give attention to basic experimental, data processing and research skills.
The first part of the course consists of small introductory experiments, where you will study traveling and standing waves in a variety of transmission media. The goal is to familiarize you with the use of a lab journal and scientific instruments, the role of measurement uncertainties in physical experiments, the interpretation of measurement results, and data processing techniques.
In the second part, a research project is carried out with a choice of experiments demonstrating e.g. interference, polarization and diffraction properties of acoustical and optical waves. The research project is carried out in three phases, each of which is evaluated and graded:
- Developing a suitable plan of work following careful analysis of test experiments
- Complete data taking and processing and critical discussion of results
- Reporting in written form in a format generally acceptable for scientific publication
Attendance
Due to the short duration and intensive nature of the lab course, 100% attendance is required.
