International Relations: dimensions of world politics (2026/2027: Semester 1 – Fall)

Cursusdoel

After completing this course students are able to:

1. know the different concepts, themes, and approaches in IR, the way they are used in the field, and how they are related to empirical questions in contemporary world politics
2. apply theories to current events in world politics
3. study, summarise, and present a classical and/or groundbreaking work in the field of IR
4. navigate a simulated experience of world politics reflexively and connect it to the approaches and theories discussed in the classroom
5. conduct an independent and original piece of research combining a theoretical approach of choice with an empirical phenomenon in world politics.

Relationship between assessment and learning goals:

a. Class participation (10% activity): assesses independence and engagement with practice (LG 4) and approaches (LG 3)
b. Presentation (10% presentation): Assesses the ability to engage with and present on relevant sources (LG 3)
c. Mid-term exam (20%, exam): Assesses knowledge of (LG 1) , and apply in case studies (LG 2), theories of IR.
d. Simulation game (10%, reflection report): assesses ability to reflexively engage with international politics (LG 4)
e. Paper set-up (10%, paper): Assesses ability to initiate independent research combining theory (LG1, 2) and empirics (LG 5).
f. Theory assignment (10%, paper): Assesses knowledge of (LG 1), and application of (LG 2), critical IR theory.
g. Final paper (30%, paper): assesses ability to position oneself in the field (LG 3), apply IR theory (LG 2) and conduct a piece of original empirical research (LG 5).

Vakinhoudelijk

This is an introductory course in the field of IR. It will give an overview of the plurality of the discipline, from foreign policy and institutionalism to postmodern and feminist approaches. It will focus on four aspects: theory, topics, reflexive practice, and research. The theories and topics will be the backbone of the course, discussing different theoretical approaches and related themes every week through readings and presentations. Reflexive practice will come in the form of a simulation game, in which direct experiences will be connected to the theoretical and empirical content of the course. In the research part, students will learn how to apply IR theory meaningfully to concrete case studies.
Format
This course is mostly based on an interactive combination of student presentations, short lectures, role-playing gaming, and classroom discussions. Apart from small assignments, there will be a take-home mid-term exam and a final paper.
