Vakinhoudelijk
Digital technologies have become ubiquitous, pervading our lives even when we are unaware of them. When these technologies and platforms generate information about us, translating all aspects of our lives into digital data, we become ‘datafied’: our identities and actions become track-able, catagoriz-able, forecast‐able, transmitt‐able and stor‐able. This ‘datafication’ not only affects our individual behaviour, it also challenges our traditional notion of citizenship, our public sphere as a site of liberal democratic practice, and our sense of community. The Internet here becomes the medium through which citizenship is being channelled and through which citizenship is being constituted. Earlier theorists optimistically embraced digital citizenry as a new networked movement of sovereign subjects mobilized by values of openness, sharing, and exchange. In the past decade, however, this view has been heavily contested and we have seen a shift of accent towards a concern for safety and security. In this course we will strive to come to grips with this contestation. That is to say, we will address the digital citizen as a political subject whose life gets mediated, configured and regulated by organisations (be it states or corporations). However, we will also identify tactics by which the digital citizen seeks to subvert sociotechnical regulations and thus overcome the determinist notion of a passive data subject.
This interdepartmental course is designed to examine digital citizenship from a variety of disciplines and fields of inquiry such as Media Studies, Anthropology, Law, Ethics, Economics, or Criminology. We will begin by tracing the concept “citizenship” and then direct our attention to what it means to be a digital citizen today. What are the political, social, economic, and cultural implications when citizenship is performed through the Internet and mediated as data via networked technology? Guest talks with scholars and experts in the field will guide students towards developing multi-disciplinary lenses.
