  • Learning to speak and write intelligently about digital art history, including current research and your own engagement with the field.
  • Awareness of the potential opportunities as well as limitations of working digitally.
  • Basic understanding of a number of fundamental tools and methods that can be applied to the study of art and cultural heritage, including image vision/machine learning/AI and 3D capture of objects via photogrammetry.
  • Insight into how digital tools can supplement traditional research methods and allow for different approaches and new questions about art and art history.

Vakinhoudelijk

This course introduces students to the rapidly expanding field of digital art history to explore how computational technologies are transforming the way in which art is studied, understood, and presented. Focusing on the intersection of art history and computer science, the course examines key digital approaches such as computer vision, 3D scanning and modelling, and the use of artificial intelligence in the analysis of artworks and cultural heritage.
Students will investigate how these technologies are currently used in museums, archives, and research projects, and will critically reflect on their possibilities and limitations. The course asks how digital methods actively shape research questions, influence interpretation, and generate new perspectives on visual and material culture. No prior technical knowledge is required.
Lectures are combined with hands-on tutorials in which students gain practical experience with selected digital tools, highlighting their research potential and critical implications for art history. The course concludes with a final project in which students develop a proposal for applying digital methods to an art-historical topic of choice exploring new possibilities for art-historical inquiry.
