Course Content
Spaces without images are rare in today’s world. One could even claim that our everyday lives are inundated by visuality, by images which circulate meaning we often consume habitually and unquestioningly. Taking the form of paintings, photography, film, music videos, television, GIFs, virtual reality, fashion - visual culture can be entertaining and afford us pleasure, impact who we are and who we aspire to be. However, it also mediates and regulates power relations and determines who is visible and who and what remains unseen.
In this course we will learn how to combine various methods (e.g. visual discourse analysis, visual ethnography) and theoretical frameworks from a variety of fields such as media studies, cultural studies, decolonial studies, race and gender studies, museum studies and visual anthropology. Equipped with a theoretically informed perspective and a sound methodical toolbox, we will tackle questions such as ‘what meanings do images produce?’, ‘how and by whom is visual culture made and circulated?’, and ‘how do different audiences and stakeholders engage with and consume media?’. Besides developing skills in academic writing, creative-practice-research (video essay, visual ethnography) is also a vital component in this course.

Format
In preparation for class meetings, students will read the assigned texts. In most weeks students will also do an exercise (e.g. prepare reading notes, analyze a video, or work on a creative exercise) outside class time which they will collect in the ‘portfolio of weekly exercises’ throughout the semester.
Some classes will feature dialogic lectures, but most classes will be held in a seminar and workshop format. Classes will provide ample opportunity to discuss texts, reflect on current debates, and apply theories and methods on case studies provided by the teacher.
Active participation in class is expected.
Please note: In spring 2024 we will go on excursion to a museum in Amsterdam.
