Upon completion of the course, student are able to:

Vakinhoudelijk

There is growing criticism of the global vs local interactions in the area of global health, particularly regarding Sexual Reproductive, Health and Rights (SRHR). The hierarchical interaction between the north and the south has been accused of sustaining colonial legacies. This interaction has also been accused of giving birth to several interventions that either fail to find local buy-in or are impractical in the context of the global south. This is partly because most voices, knowledge systems, worldviews and ways of being of people in the south have remained subordinate to those of the West. However, there are calls to not only be inclusive in SRHR response, but to also dismantle the systematically-hierarchical institutional arrangements in order to allow different ways of being to democratically coexist in a mutually productive manner in order to benefit the people it is meant to serve (People in Global South).
This course aims to engage in this conversation especially from an SRHR perspective within the global south. It looks at various issues regarding interventions focusing on LGBTQ+ issues, Gender, HIV/AIDS and maternal health. The course aims at both giving students an opportunity to understand SRHR perspectives of the global south and to do so while practically engaging in a 4 weeks attachment with an organization.

Format
The program involves a 1 week intensive training on campus, and the second part involves undertaking a 4 week community engagement at one of our partner organizations in Southern Africa (physically or via correspondence) and in the Netherlands (but with focus on the global south). Students will all meet online 3 times per week..

Placement options
Depending on their preferences and interests. the coordinator will match students to an internship partner for:
- physical placement in Southern Africa. The host will arrange (but not always pay) accommodation.
- online placement in Southern Africa:

Costs if you opt to travel abroad
Travel, accommodation, and meal costs vary per country and per partner. Also note insurance costs. The coordinator has a full list of estimates.
A physical placement in the Netherlands may also come with some travel expenses.

  1. expression of interest: deadline Friday March 29, 2024 (motivation of 200 words + match prerequisites)
  2. pre-enrolment and final placement according to regular summer course schedule, also without early expression of interest
