Mechanisms of Diseases
Cursusdoel
After completing this course students are able to:
- Summarise the main anatomical, physiological and pathophysiological aspects of the major organ systems of the human body, through presentations, essays and discussions.
- Analyse the signs and symptoms that indicate failing of normal human physiologic processes.
- Demonstrate clinical reasoning based on pathophysiologic disease concepts and establish a diagnosis in a hypothetical patient.
- Discuss and interpret social determinants of health that contribute to human diseases
- Discuss pathophysiology and basic clinical presentation of important topics linked to global health: Child health; air pollution; mental health; reproductive system and maternal health.
- Written in-class exam 1: to analyze, anatomical, physiological, and pathophysiological aspects of gastrointestinal disease manifestations (course goals 1 to 4).,
- Written in-class exam 2: to test your knowledge and ability to discuss and analyze, anatomical, physiological, and pathophysiological aspects of cardiovascular disease manifestations (course goals 1 to 4).
- Written in-class exam 3: to test your knowledge and ability to discuss and analyze, anatomical, physiological, and pathophysiological aspects of respiratory disease manifestations (course goals 1 to 4).
- Written in-class exam 4: to test your knowledge and ability to discuss and analyze, anatomical, physiological, and pathophysiological aspects of renal, and urinary tract disease manifestations (course goals 1 to 4).
- Written in-class exam 5: to test your knowledge and ability to discuss and analyze anatomical, physiological, and pathophysiological aspects of endocrine disease manifestations (course goals 1 to 4).
- Presentations in-class (15% of the final grade) and essay writing (12% of the final grade) on anatomical, and physiological aspects of major organ system of the human body and mechanisms of human diseases (course goals 3,4)
- One essay (3% of the final grade) devoted to analyzing global public health topics and its influence on disease causation and progression (course goals 4,5)
- Active participation (10% of the final grade) during in-class discussions and case study activities, together with personal feedback from the instructor (course goals 1 to 5)

- Gastrointestinal tract
- Heart and blood vessels
- Upper, lower airways and the lungs
- Kidneys and the urinary tract
- Endocrine glands
- Reproductive system
- Immunology (an introduction).
To demonstrate the relation between two or more organ systems, the course ends with a study of diabetes mellitus, which is a multi-organ disorder.
Aside from these systems, the course will explore five important topics in global health and its relationship with health:
- Child health
- Air pollution
- Mental health
- Reproductive and maternal health
