Cursusdoel

1. Recognizing main concepts, theories, and methodologies within the field of Postcolonial and Decolonial studies;
2. Identifying and analyzing (post)colonial dynamics in their intersections with gender, sexuality, race, nation, and class, locally and globally;
3. Identify main scholarship in the field(s) of Postcolonial and Decolonial studies and analyzing theoretical texts within their historical-political context, as well as connecting them to contemporary cultural artefacts (particularly audio-visual material);
4. Interpreting and analyzing cultural objects in the context of their medium and genre specificity.
5. Examining contemporary social, political and cultural phenomena and representations through the lens of course concepts and theories.

Vakinhoudelijk

The course focuses on the main theories and debates in the postcolonial study of the intersections between racial formations, gender and sexuality, and cultural practices. Students will develop an understanding of race as a specific object of inquiry within postcolonial theory. There will also be an emphasis on introducing and sharpening key conceptual tools for analyzing the intersections between race and the social vectors of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, class, and culture. The course examines postcolonial global realities, paying close attention to postcolonial configurations of social and political relations and the ways in which various expressive forms have recorded and engaged with these postcolonial realities. Questions of power and global asymmetry, social inclusion and exclusion, and cultural representation and appropriation will be addressed in our analyses of authors and cultural products that contest, transgress, and rearticulate national boundaries and social identities.

LAS and TCS students who follow this course as part of the core curriculum of their major (hoofdrichting Postcolonial and Gender Studies) are required to complete one of the following compulsory preparation courses: Introduction to Gender Studies (blok 3), Gender, intersectionaliteit en cultuurkritiek (blok 1) or Gender, Intersectionality and Cultural Critique (block 1). Aanvullende informatie

This course has priority rules and a waiting list. Your enrolment is guaranteed if you

  • are a student in the BA Liberal Arts and Sciences or Taal- en Cultuurstudies and this course is part of your specialisation (kernpakket)
  • are enrolled in the Postcolonial Studies minor
  • are an exchange student and meet the course’s entry requirements

In all other situations, you will be placed on a waiting list if you enrol in this course. For any remaining slots in the course, lots are drawn among the students on the waiting list.


Early Exit option for international exchange students (5 ECTS)

Exchange students who are required to return to their home university before January, are allowed to choose an Early Exit option for this course. The Early Exit option means that students can finish the course before Christmas break, receiving 5 ECTS for the course. Students must make arrangements with the course coordinator at the start of the course.
