Research in Practice: Methods and statistics for the Social Scientist
Cursusdoel
- design an empirical research project in the social sciences and take relevant methodological issues into account
- report research findings in a formal format resembling a peer-reviewed journal article
- conduct basic descriptive and inferential statistical procedures using the software SPSS
- (a) interpret SPSS output and (b) report the findings following the APA format
- collaborate with other students and work in a research team
- understand, apply, and explain all methodological and statistical terminology
- explain all course related methodological and statistical concepts using everyday language

Vakinhoudelijk
Research in Practice is an introduction to the methodology and analysis techniques used in social science research. Students are encouraged to acquire all relevant information through group discussions and projects. The topics of this course will not follow the traditional order offered in standard textbooks, but, as the title indicates, will follow the order as needed by social science research in practice. Topics covered include research design, ethics, sampling, measurement, and various analysis techniques for associations between variables and differences between groups. Format and grading To pass this course, both exams MUST be passed with at least a C- For access to level 2 (UCACCMET22 or UCACCMET23) a minimum grade D- is required for the SPSS test as well. |
