Research in Practice: Methods and statistics for the Social Scientist (2026/2027: Semester 2 – Spring)
Cursusdoel
- critically evaluate empirical research designs in the social sciences and take relevant methodological issues into account
- understand, apply, and explain methodological and statistical terminology
- report statistical results in APA format
- conduct basic descriptive and inferential statistical procedures using the software JASP
- interpret JASP output

Vakinhoudelijk
| The course “Research in Practice” is an introduction to the research methodology and statistical analysis techniques used in social science research. The topics of this course will not follow the traditional order offered in standard textbooks, but, as the title indicates, will follow the order as needed by social science research in practice. Topics covered include research design, ethics, sampling, measurement, reliability and validity, and various analysis techniques for associations between variables and differences between groups. Format and grading For a period of 15 weeks, there are two 2-hour meetings per week. Half of the meetings will be devoted to lectures. The other half of the time, students will work on JASP labs, activities, or other small assignments. For access to UCACCMET22 a minimum grade D is required for the JASP test. Students who did not pass this exam with a D and wish to take the course UCACCMET22, can contact the course coordinator of UCACCMET12 to schedule a separate exam to meet this entrance requirement. |
